Call for Student Volunteers

The Organising Committee now welcomes applications from students who are interested in volunteering at ISWC2013. There are a number of positions for enthusiastic student volunteers who would like to participate in the organisation and running of the conference, with ample opportunity to attend various sessions and to network with other attendees and key Semantic Web researchers.

Applications should be submitted no later than Monday 7th October, 2013

Please note, if we receive enough applications before October 7th, we will close applications early, so consider applying now!

Applicants are also reminded that a Visa is required to enter Australia, which may take several weeks to process. If you wish to be a student volunteer at ISWC and require a Visa, please submit your application below, and contact us to see if we can expedite your application.

Duties

Student volunteers are expected to partake in a number of organisational activities, from behind-the-scenes work to meeting and greeting attendees and fielding questions. These include:

  • Preparing conference and sponsor materials
  • Welcoming attendees, accepting registrations and providing directions
  • Setting up the conference spaces including posters and demos
  • Assisting session chairs in setting up presentations and handling AV equipment
  • Providing conference attendees with information

The Organising Committee will work to roster students so they receive a wide variety of tasks, while taking student preferences for attending conference sessions into account, and will aim to minimise work at the registration desk.

Benefits

Successful applicants will receive free registration to ISWC 2013 and may attend any plenary, workshop and poster/demo sessions subject to rostering constraints. All meals will be available to the student volunteers during the conference. Student volunteers will be expected to work for several hours a day over each of the 5 days, amounting to at least 60% of the conference duration. Those students working at least 80% of the conference duration will also receive a free ticket to the dinner cruise! As part of the Organising Committee, student volunteers will be required to wear official ISWC 2013 T-shirts to be easily spotted by our attendees. Note that funding for travel or accommodation will not be provided, although students (especially those with work accepted to ISWC2013) are encouraged to apply for a student travel award, applications due August 15th.

Participating as a student volunteer is a unique networking opportunity providing high visibility to conference attendees, including key researchers in the Semantic Web, as well as other students and junior researchers. The names of all successful student volunteer applicants will be published on the ISWC website. We will be also be organising several social events prior to and during the conference, to make the student volunteer experience as fun and rewarding as possible!

Eligibility

Eligible applicants are students who are currently enrolled in a university course (undergraduate, masters or PhD) and who have attended their course for at least one full semester in the academic year prior to the conference date. Note that applicants who have any work accepted at the conference will receive preference. Local students are especially encouraged to apply.
