Accommodation in Sydney

General Information

Australian hotels are generally of good quality; even the cheapest will provide clean facilities that meet the advertised description. Sydney is a desirable international city; you will not find prices low unless you are willing to stay on the outskirts.

Normally you pay the same rate for a room however many people use it, although there will be a maximum capacity for any room, often two adults and one child. Sharing a bigger room or apartment can be cost-effective for a group of  friends.

Breakfast is not  normally included in  the basic room rate; but it may be included in a package for a small extra charge.

Hotels generally provide (instant) coffee and tea-making facilities in the room at no charge and a pay-for-use minibar stocked with drinks and snacks.  Studio rooms may also have a well equipped kitchenette.

Most hotels will require you to provide pre-authorisation via a credit card either at booking or on check-in, but they don't take any payment from the card until you check out. A 1.5%-3.5% fee may be charged on credit card transactions; which can be avoided by paying by cash or eftpos. Usually you can cancel a booking without any charge up to the day before check in.

Check in is commonly from 2pm. Check out time is usually 10am.

When you are considering location, note that the workshops and tutorials will be held at the Sydney Masonic Centre on Goulburn Street and the main conference will be at the Sydney Convention Centre at Darling Harbour. These are about 15 minutes apart by foot.

Rydges World Square Sydney is very close to the workshops venue in the southern CBD and a 15 minute walk from the main conference venue. Novotel Darling Harbour and the lower-cost  Ibis Darling Harbour are  mid-range hotels adjacent to the main conference venue and 20 minutes away from the workshops venue by foot. Some weekends may incur a minimum 2 night stay requirement. You will also find Ibis Sydney World Square and Ibis Sydney King Street Wharf on that link;  they are both well located for ISWC and cost much less although there are no special rates.

Adina Harbourside Apartments are modern and well located in central Sydney, directly across the water from the main conference venue, about 10 minutes by foot from there and 15 minutes from the workshops venue. YWCA Hyde Park is most suitable for those on a budget, offering backpacker through to studio rooms, all inclusive of breakfast. It will take only 5 minutes to walk to the workshop venue, and 20 for the main conference venue.

Park Royal Darling Harbour  is a newly-renovated high-end hotel. Most rooms have good views and it is about 10 minutes by foot from both the workshops and the conference venues.
